ACAN is a Community Benefit Society.
In becoming a member, you join a people-powered movement and help to support the many great ACAN initiatives. As member you receive a regular newsletter, have voting rights, receive early alerts and reduced rates for ACAN events, and can help steer the direction of the organisation. If you want to help ACAN flourish and grow into an ever more effective, energetic climate action network, then membership is for you!
ACAN will always remain an open network, free for all to participate in knowledge sharing on our Discord platform and join our actions, but your membership fees are crucial to enabling ACAN’s pioneering work.
Your support through becoming a Member is vital to ensuring that we remain operationally viable, while being able to keep our ACAN network, Thematic Groups and many resources open and available for free.
Your contribution will directly support our activities by:
- Paying for the time of our very small Movement Support Team (currently equivalent to two days per week)
- Paying for organisational infrastructure such as subscriptions for our zoom accounts and accountants fees
- Helping to finance our StuCAN events and the ACAN stand at Futurebuild
ACAN members will also benefit from the following:
- Reduced ticket prices for ACAN events
- Voting rights (for example when we elect the Steering Group)
- Company supporters can display an ACAN supporter badge on their website
Note: There is a reduced ‘Student membership’ rate for those in education and the opportunity to request a waiver if your individual financial circumstances will make it difficult to meet the Membership fee. In such instances, please contact us directly.
ACAN has always been, and always will be, a lively network of individuals coming together to take action as a collective through various self-organising working groups. Authority is distributed around this network. As we grew it became necessary to introduce more structure, which saw the creation of a ‘Steering Group’ to work on overall strategy and administration. It was always the intention that roles within this group would rotate, and that the wider network should have oversight of the Steering Group’s activities.
In 2021 the Steering Group established the Architects Climate Action Network Limited, a Community Benefit Society (CBS)*. This cooperative legal structure was chosen as it seemed the best fit to our current activities as well as our democratic values. Adopting a legal structure will allow us to seek grant funding and enshrines us as a not-for-profit entity. As a CBS we must define our membership more formally, in return each member owns a share in the organisation and a voice in major decisions. For example they may vote for, nominate and run for roles as Directors in the Steering Group. As a member, you will provide oversight and be able to take part in the Governance of ACAN as a whole.
Each member will own 1 share of the organization and have 1 vote in proceedings
Membership is only available to individuals over 16 years old.

We seek to radically transform the regulatory, economic and cultural landscape in which our built environment is made, operated and renewed in order to facilitate rapid decarbonisation of the built environment.
ECOLOGICAL REGENERATION!
We advocate the immediate adoption of regenerative & ecological principles in order to green the built environment, prioritise communities and ecosystems at threat and promote the recovery and restoration of natural environments.
CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION!
We call for a complete remodelling of our professional culture. We must challenge and redefine the value systems at the heart of our industry and education system. We seek to create an open network to share resources and knowledge to aid in this transition.

*You don’t have to become a member to continue being a part of ACAN: coming to meetings, attending events, taking part in actions and describing yourself as a part of ACAN. We are, and always will be an open network, free for all to participate.

As an “Assembly for a Just Building Transition", we use our diversity and differences to recognise strong points of convergence and a shared responsibility to act now. By working across contexts, we are building a collective European process that remains open, iterative and representative.
