We are united in our support of the demands of Just Stop Oil and feel the disproportionate punishment for their actions signals a concerning authoritarian approach towards all who take part in non violent protest.
Just Stop Oil defendants were not permitted to give full accounts of their motivations, meaning jurors were not given the opportunity to fully understand motives before reaching a verdict. The arrest of those holding banners outside court during a separate court case sets a dangerous precedent for all who wish to take part in peaceful demonstrations.
ACAN, with its diverse opinions, believes that environmental protesters should not get sentences above that of violent offenders. We call for the repeal of the PCSC Act, introduced by the previous government and under which this sentencing was delivered.
