In response to this article in the news today, we at the Architects Climate Action Network (ACAN!) issue a solemn condemnation in response to the tragic death of a migrant worker at Aramco Stadium in Saudi Arabia, where he faced grave risks amidst exploitative conditions. This loss marks yet another grim statistic in the toll of over 21,000 migrant worker deaths since 2016 on Saudi Arabia’s ‘giga projects’.
This incident casts a stark light on the ongoing disregard for human life by construction companies like Besix Group, which must now confront the consequences of their negligence. The passing of Muhammad Arshad is not just a tragedy for him, but a life-altering blow to his young family—his wife, three sons, and all those who loved him.
We must acknowledge that we are failing to rectify our past mistakes and falling short in preventing such catastrophes. The construction industry’s operations in the built environment too often foster conditions akin to modern slavery, condoning actions that amount to state-sanctioned violence and crimes against humanity. This must stop.
Despite FIFA’s decision to award Saudi Arabia the 2034 World Cup, aware of the widespread labor abuses underpinning its ‘Giga-Projects’, ACAN vehemently denounces this endorsement. It is imperative that immediate action is taken to address these systemic injustices and ensure justice for every worker who risks their life in pursuit of these projects. We demand accountability and swift reform to protect human rights and dignity in every facet of global construction.
